So, even if Congressional pay was stopped, they would just grin because the paychecks they really care about keep on coming.
Since the beginning of the current partial government shutdown, citizens have been calling in to talk shows and suggesting that Congress should not get paid until they vote for the Continuing Resolution to end the shutdown. I have some bad news…
Decades ago, Congress voted for a special exemption for themselves in the event of future government shutdowns.
Yup, you guessed it, they continue to be paid while other government employees don’t, including their own Congressional staff. There are “rules for thee, but not for me.”
“Few men [or women] have virtue to withstand the highest bidder.” ~ George Washington
Whether those elected to Congress get paid or not, their government paycheck is inconsequential. The people in Congress are not becoming millionaires based on their government paycheck. For most of Congress, regardless of party, special interest groups are the the source of most of their income. Sadly, the highest bidder isn’t the American taxpayers.
“Sometimes party loyalty asks too much.” ~ John F. Kennedy
As of this writing, the Senate Democrat have voted not to reopen government 13 times. Even the government employee’s union is begging Democrats to stop this foolishness. However, we must remember how much smarter Democrats are than the rest of us. They are so smart they might annoy and lose their Deep State operative, buried deep in civil service. After all, hate will only go so far after the paychecks stop coming.
The civil servants will be OK. Even those employees not going to work during the shutdown will get full back pay and benefits continue as usual. However, this situation scares the hell out of federal employees suffering through their first shutdown. It did for me and my wife.
So, even if Congressional pay was stopped, they would just grin because the paychecks they really care about keep on coming.
